Coach notes

There might be no summer more important for high school athletes than the one before their senior year.

Student-athletes have put in all the hard work on and off the field for three years (and more) to get to this point. For football players, the summer means more work in the weight room and hours out on the practice fields in preparation for one last run at a banner, and maybe to earn a scholarship.

Hudson Catholic quarterback Chris Lang Jr. has already put in so much work to get to this point: now, he is doing the extra things to get to that next level.

Lang Jr. took over under center last year and led Hudson Catholic to more wins (eight) then it had in the two previous seasons (seven), and its first winning season in four years, as a junior.

Now, he is ready to make that next jump, and win a title or two. Lang Jr. crushed it in the classroom this year and has his GPA ready to bounce higher from a 3.75. He is also bulking up, and speeding up, as he leads the team in the conditioning.

That is what leaders do: lead by example.

Here is what one of his coaches had to say about the QB: 

“He has a cannon arm, great pocket presence, can run with power out of the pocket, is effective throwing on the run, can run wild cat, pro set, run and gun and or all the above. He is a great student as well. Lang has a 3.75 GPA and has been on the Honor Roll every year in high school. 

“With one more year to go for him to build on a fantastic 2021 campaign, Lang will no doubt have a lot more to add to his ever-growing honors list.” 

This summer is going to be a very important one for Lang Jr.: he is sure to make it count and come out in his senior season ready to build on his impressive 2021 campaign.

Jersey City, NJ: What is one thing on the athletic fields around the country that cannot be immediately quantifiable?

You can see stats and measurements, but sometimes, a player is just a winner.

Hudson Catholic’s Chris Lang, Jr. is just that: a winner.

You only need to look at his record under center in his junior season with Hudson Catholic: Lang, Jr. took over as quarterback and took a team that had just one winning season in four years and had gone 4-7 and 3-4 in the last two seasons, to an 8-2 record in 2021.

Leadership matters, and so does a winning mentality: Lang has both.

It is not just on the field, either; Lang adds a 3.8 GPA, honor roll, extensive community service and varsity basketball to his resume. 

His coaches always speak highly of his work on and off the football field:
