Class of ‘23 DE/LB Jawuan Wess Set for Pivotal Season in Louisiana

Independence, LA: Jawuan Wess is ready for his senior season.

The real question then, is 2A District 9 ready for Wess and the Independence football team?

Last year, Independence went 2-6, but there is a lot of positive hype around the team heading into the 2022 campaign. Wess, who plays linebacker and defensive end, is one of the senior leaders on the team, and is ready to get his team to .500 plus for the first time since 2017.

Wess has taken a leadership role in the offseason workouts, getting his team more involved in the weight room and strength/conditioning. Wess has used this winter and spring to get stronger and faster as well: he has his 40 time down under 4.7 laser verified, and that should keep dropping as he continues to push this summer.

In the classroom, Wess has a 3.0 GPA, which is expected to rise after his junior year grades settle. He should end his high school career well above a 3.0.

Here is a scouting report on the player:

“Right now, there is still some debate about which position will suit the defensive star in 2022. He can play both linebacker and defensive end, but of course with his size and speed he is probably better suited to be a linebacker. He is very fast, super quick to the ball. Wess has a high football IQ and does a very good job reading plays – he’s always in on or at least around the tackle.”

“This is going to be an interesting season for him. He took over some leadership responsibilities in the offseason heading into his final high school year, and I think that could be a very positive experience. He should rise to the challenge, and help this team battle each game towards the .500 mark and beyond.”
