NJ Football '23 Rising Star Senior Hudson Hawk WR/DB Joseph "JoJo" Garcia Has Big 2022 Season in Sights

Jersey City, NJ: Hudson Catholic was cruising for much of the 2021 New Jersey high school football season.

The Hawks went into the NJSIAA Non-Public B tournament on a roll, going 8-1 in the regular season with their only loss in overtime to North Jersey Group 4 champions Irvington.

Then, the wheels came off at the wrong time: in the first round of the playoffs.

That 28-0 defeat to Holy Spirit left a bad taste in many of the players' mouths and ensured that this off-season would be one of dedication.

For Joseph "JoJo" Garcia, that meant a lot of time in the weight room, hours studying film, and vigorous workouts with his quarterback Chris Lang Jr.

What is that going to mean for opponents this fall? A lot of Garcia making plays on both sides of the ball. The Class of 2024 star is poised to have breakout campaigns at wide receiver and in the defensive backfield, whether at safety or cornerback.

Garcia made All-Division, All-Conference, and Second Team Defense in 2021 and strives for a better fall in 2022.

A 3.8 GPA in the classroom makes Garcia a star off the field, too, and it's expected to rise higher in the coming weeks. He already has an offer from Wagner College and has interest from Penn, Princeton, the Naval Academy, Holy Cross, Norfolk St., and the University of St. Thomas.

Here is a scouting report on the versatile player:

"I think Garcia can be a big weapon in the offense, especially with teams keying on 1,350-yard rusher Jacob Rodriguez. But he is key on the defense, and that is where he earned so many plaudits last year. The unit was a little young, so an extra year might help them tighten up and turn some of the 31-26 games into 31-14. If you can hold these teams down on defense, Hudson Catholic is going to score.

"I think it all comes down to the seeding in the playoffs, and the Hawks need to be near the top to get some momentum. But Non-Public is brutal, so we will see if they can make a run. Garcia is going to be a big key to that."
